The £1bn regeneration of Edinburgh St James shopping centre is one of the biggest developments currently underway in the UK. The redevelopment is integrated with an existing John Lewis store which is to remain open throughout the four year construction schedule.

A particular challenge faced on the scheme was the construction of a new three-level basement car park underneath the existing John Lewis store, which will be integrated into the new retail offering. Tony Gee’s innovative and complex temporary works consisting of jacked transfer trestles, integrated with a ground anchor restrained contiguous piled wall and encapsulated under a rigorous monitoring scheme, allowed the store to remain open throughout construction.

To construct a new multi-storey car park beneath the John Lewis store 9No. temporary steel trestles with integrated hydraulics were installed as transfer structures, to underpin the in-service store and enable the removal and replacement of existing concrete columns and secondary floor beams.
