The extension for the Beckton Depot came as part of the upgrade to the wider and new Docklands Light Railway Limited train programme. Tony Gee acted as lead designer with multi-disciplinary sub consultancy provided by Hurleypalmerflatt and Kilborn Consulting.
The DLR is the busiest light railway within the UK, this development will provide the depot the capability of running 3-car trains straight through from either end and sees the arrival of 54 new five-car trains as part of the wider programme. Tony Gee was anointed the lead designer for the scheme and was subsequently retained to provide support through the construction phase.
The design was strongly influenced by the need to construct the extension in a way which tied in with the existing building whilst still keeping the depot fully functional which provided a challenge for Tony Gee, liaison with the depot took place at all stages to construct a methodology which would achieve this.
