Project synopsis

Roads, drainage and earthworks design services for Tomatin Substation as part of the LT19 Knocknageal to Tomatin project

Contractor

RJ McLeod / I&H Brown

End client

SSE Networks

This project came as part of the wider Knocknagael to Tomatin transmission scheme which includes grid connections for the 275/132kV Tomatin Substation

Tony Gee was initially engaged by SSE Networks to design public road improvements to the adjacent road network in which extensive consultation was undertaken to agree with the scope of the improvements.

Later commissioned to work on the 275 / 132kV Tomatin Substation Platform, Tony Gee provided earthworks platform and drainage designs using 3D software which outlined a simpler and cost-saving construction phase as a result of moving the platform location, this led to a reduced need of earthworks as well as a significant reduction in peat excavation.

Tony Gee also carried out abutment extensions designs for a water course bridge crossing on the access to the substation which consisted of a pre-fabricated steel abutment extension and was designed following the assessment of the existing access.
