Tony Gee is seeking an exceptional Drainage Director to lead and grow our drainage capability, shaping the technical direction, people development, and strategic delivery of complex infrastructure projects across the UK.
About the Role
As Drainage Director, you will provide senior leadership across all aspects of drainage design, across all the sectors in which we operate. You will set the technical vision, drive innovation, and ensure our teams deliver robust, sustainable, and buildable solutions that reflect Tony Gee’s reputation for engineering excellence.
You will work closely with heads of sector, project directors and clients to influence early design decisions, strengthen our market position, and support the continued expansion of our drainage and hydrology offering.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the strategic development of Tony Gee’s drainage discipline, including capability growth, technical governance, and resource planning.
- Provide technical leadership on major projects, ensuring high-quality, compliant, and innovative drainage solutions.
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients, contributing to bids, frameworks, and strategic pursuits.
- Champion digital delivery, sustainable drainage, climate resilience, and whole‑life design principles.
- Mentor and develop engineers across the practice, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Represent Tony Gee in industry forums, standards groups, and professional networks.
About You
You will bring deep expertise in drainage engineering for major infrastructure, alongside proven leadership experience and a passion for developing people and capability. You will be confident engaging with clients, shaping strategy, and driving technical quality across multidisciplinary teams.
Essential Experience
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) with significant experience in drainage design for highways, rail, and major infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of UK standards (including non-statutory technical standards, building regulations and local drainage guidance documents), regulatory frameworks, and best practice in drainage and hydrology, including SuDS and flood risk management
- Ability to influence at senior levels and build strong client relationships.
- Commitment to innovation, digital engineering, and sustainable design.
- Able to confidently lead the preparation of drainage designs from concept to detailed design and construction, across sectors such as;
- Lead a team in the preparation and submission of S104 applications, providing crucial drainage design support for S106 and S278 designs in Highways.
- Be able to lead a team to prepare and deliver all stages of railway drainage design including Form A and B designs, and undertaking the role of drainage design CRE for complex Network Rail projects.
- Lead discussions with the Lead Local Flood Authorities, (LLFA), Environment Agency, (EA) and Water Authorities, (WA).
- Champion buildable designs that seek to eliminate health and safety risks at all stages of the project.
