Tony Gee was involved in the design and erection of a new $3.5bn midfield terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport, the most significant development in the airport's history.

Tony Gee was involved in the erection of the 26,000T steel roof for the new $3.5bn terminal. The 26,000T steel roof is an undulating wavelike shape and is formed by primary steel arch trusses and fabricated girders that form the final shape. Detailed design work was carried out of the steelwork connections in the primary roof structure.

Tony Gee also developed innovative temporary support solutions to facilitate the roof erection and prepared numerous designs for secondary steelwork, finishes and chandeliers throughout the rest of the terminal.

Two key elements of the design included the connections between the primary, secondary and bracing elements of the central roof area that formed the wave over the top of the arch trusses, including the top head connection and de-propping scheme which defined the support geometry from the exported 3D Tekla model which carried out 3D clash detection to ensure the top heads structures did not clash with the permanent works and deriving loads of the support towers.
