Grand Surrey Canal Bridge Wins Rail Bridge Project of the Year

The Grand Surrey Canal Bridge was named Rail Bridge Project of the Year at the New Civil Engineer Bridges Conference & Awards on 17th July at a gala dinner hosted at the Hilton Bankside.

Tony Gee was engaged by BAM UK & Ireland, working for Network Rail, as designer for this project. Our innovative solution placed a concrete arch viaduct under the existing 43m span deck with structural infilling between, encasing the existing deck into the new viaduct. With limited possession availability, the design was developed to maximise off track/site construction.

Key features included low headroom piling, a “robust” edge beam for derailment protection, and precast skewed concrete arches, driven in by SPMT in a matter of days.

The judges said: ‘this project demonstrated a highly sustainable and efficient approach, expertly minimizing disruption to the railway. Through innovative use of low-carbon materials and preservation of original fabric, it delivered a visually striking and functional space that enhanced community engagement. Despite complex ground conditions, the project was completed on time and under budget, reflecting exceptional management and value’.

Congratulations to all involved in delivering this successful project.
