Tony Gee's Esher office welcomed the Mayor of Elmbridge and his Mayoress last week to join in with some fundraising fun.

Engineering designs of the edible variety were the order of the day in Esher last week as the Mayor of Elmbridge, Cllr John Sheldon, and his Mayoress, Cllr Mary Sheldon visited Tony Gee’s head office to join in fundraising activities in aid of international disaster relief charity RedR.

They embraced the spirit of the occasion by wearing items of red clothing, and sampling the array of creative cakes in the Great RedR Bake Off; a new initiative this year from Tony Gee’s fundraising team, where staff members were challenged to design and bake a cake on an engineering theme. Natalie Cropp’s ingenious depiction of the top-hatted legend of civil engineering, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was a chocoholic’s dream and won her first prize.

Director of Fundraising and Communications at RedR, Anne Durrant, thanked Tony Gee for the team’s continued efforts and showed a thought provoking video outlining the importance of RedR’s work supporting other organisations re-building lives after the immediate effects of natural and man-made disasters.

Executive Managing Director Graham Nicholson said, “Friday was fun packed but with a serious purpose of helping those who are far worse off than ourselves. We’d like to thank the Mayor and Mayoress for helping support the fund raising activities which helped raise over £300 towards our target for this year of £3,000.”

Tony Gee recently exhibited at the Infrastructure Show at the NEC at Birmingham.

The event provides a forum for civil engineers to explore the latest innovations and discuss and debate the challenges of delivering major infrastructure projects.

Executive Managing Director and Chairman of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering, Graham Nicholson presented a seminar on Wednesday 19 October entitled “Where are the areas of opportunity for UK infrastructure? Where will investments be made to support transport and energy generation in the coming years?”

The winner of our stand competition was Jeff Jones of Radflex Contract Services, shown here collecting his prize from Graham Nicholson. The challenge was to estimate the number of piles that formed the cofferdam at Canary Wharf Station; one of many projects demonstrating how we can solve complex engineering challenges through innovation.

Over 200 members of the public were given an opportunity to view Blackfriars Project from a vantage point on the River Thames last month, as part of the Open House London weekend.

Every September Open House London celebrates the capital’s building, places and neighbourhoods. Members of the public are invited to get up close and personal with London’s architectural landmark. Over 700 buildings of all kinds, across London take part in the free event.

To mark the event at Blackfriars, the project collaborated with the project’s marine suppliers – Livett’s Launchers – and hosted trips from Blackfriars Pier.

The group were accompanied by Balfour Beatty and Tony Gee engineers (Senior Engineer Tommy Szeto is pictured in the centre), who provided expert advice on the current project status, key milestones achieved and future projections.

Two of Tony Gee’s marine projects, Three Mills Lock and Loxwood Lock and Bridge, have achieved success at the 2011 Waterways Renaissance Awards.

Two of Tony Gee’s marine projects, Three Mills Lock and Loxwood Lock and Bridge, have achieved success at the 2011 Waterways Renaissance Awards.

Three Mills Lock, London’s first new lock for 20 years, won the Design and Construction category at the ceremony, which recognises exceptional schemes that use canals and rivers to enrich people’s lives across the UK. Working on behalf of VolkerStevin, Tony Gee acted as lead designers for the new tidal lock, fixed adjustable weirs and fish pass.

The new lock opens up the Bow Back Rivers, a network of waterways in and around the Lower Lea Valley. This creates a green gateway for freight barges for the first time in 50 years and in legacy will open up the waterways in and around the Olympic Park to leisure boats. The scheme also received runner-up prizes for the Flood Risk Management and Area-Based Regeneration Awards.

Loxwood Canal Crossing and Lock won the Community Category Award and was commended in the Design and Construction category. The new bridge removes a major obstacle to the full restoration of “London’s lost route to the Sea.”

The Wey & Arun Canal Trust initially commissioned Tony Gee to carry out a feasibility study to investigate various options for the construction of the bridge, the new lock and the earthworks required to lower the canal. Subsequently Tony Gee carried out the detailed design of the bridge and the earth retaining structures and also acted as the CDM Co-ordinator for the scheme.

Birmingham City Council's Selly Oak New Road Phase 2 has won three top awards at the ICE West Midlands Region Awards.

Selly Oak New Road Phase 2, part of Birmingham City Council’s £1.3 billion regeneration investment claimed the Overall Project Award for 2011 and two other prestigious awards at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) annual ceremony for the West Midlands region.

Birse Civils/Rail and Tony Gee teamed up for a £16 million contract for the design and construction of two new 70 metre long, three-span reinforced concrete bridges to carry the railway and canal over the new bypass.

The scheme, due for completion by July 2011, was also highly commended in a fourth category for Sustainability. It was originally planned as a 100 metre long tunnel taking the new road through a 14 metre high embankment. Tony Gee developed the Innovation Award winning alternative double bridge design, providing significant construction benefits and a more attractive environment for pedestrians.

A temporary canal diversion and careful phasing of the works enabled the busy cross-city railway to remain fully operational throughout construction and minimise disruption to commuters and the local community.
